Here's a piece I probably had too much fun writing. It's over at Recovering Yogi, a smart, wicked online yoga magazine. UPDATE: This piece has been reposted to elephant journal, right here.
. . . Something interesting has happened since I finished writing Yoga Bitch. I think I may have grown all wise and shit. No, really. I think I’m just a little bit enlightened. Like, I seem to have evolved in my practice so that very little bothers me and I don’t really care if I look terrible in class, or if everybody around me can do crow pose while I lie face-down on my mat, weeping silently. I’m just sort of okay with that, now. It’s like, having written Yoga Bitch, I said what I needed to say and now I can just be a yogi who happens to cry a lot during the more challenging postures.

I really appreciate what you said about ego and the vinyasa style. I had a similar experience in LA, injuring my neck pretty bad in a teacher training, b/c I didn't want to admit my limitations. . . Now I prefer a quieter, more contemplative practice, but it's hard to find that in an environment saturated by "hot yoga". I just moved to Seattle a month ago, and am at a loss about where to practice yoga here. I bought a 2-month unlimited pass to one (unnamed) studio, but in 4 weeks no one there has even bothered to ask my name, like it's a chore to even say "good morning". I could practice at home, but would love to meet other like-minded folks in Seattle... Can you offer any suggestions?
Thanks. Danielle
Thanks, Danielle! Sounds like you're experiencing a bit of the Seattle freeze. It takes a while to get to know people here, but once you do, things get a lot better.
Some good yoga studios: Seattle Yoga Arts, the 3 different 8 Limbs studios, Yoga Tree in Fremont, Samadhi Yoga.
I hope you find one you feel at home in!
I'll be honest. The title of your book didn't grab me (quite the opposite), but when I read this piece on Elephant Journal I fell on the floor laughing like some kind of crazed and convulsing hyena in a spinal twist. And so I've ordered it.
As much as I love yoga, I'm nowhere close to enlightenment, and so I surely can appreciate a good laugh now and again.
Thank-you. Looking forward to receiving it.
Thanks, Donna! Hope you enjoy the book!
Has the Sailor ever gone to a yoga class?
Oh boy, I'm SO glad I found you! I love that you can be a truth seeker and still say shit! Thanks for opening my world that little bit further :)
Tom: he has!
Ruby: Fuck yeah. Thanks for finding me!
